WHITPAIN TOWNSHIP, PA - The newest member of the Whitpain Township's Parks system is open. The Board of Supervisors tonight officially opened the former Mermaid Swim Club property to the community.
The park is open daily from dawn-to-dusk and park users can enjoy a 2-mile mown trail that meanders through the 63-acre property.
“We are pleased to open the park to the public after it was permanently preserved earlier this year,” said Supervisor Chair Michele Minnick. “Without the acquisition, this beautiful property would have been developed with 53 single-family homes and a large billboard. Instead, the community gets to enjoy its beauty.”
The Supervisors held a small ribbon-cutting due to COVID-19 health and safety protocols. The weather is perfect for the park’s first full day.
Since the Township acquired the property in August, Public Works crews have been working on nights and weekends to secure buildings, remove hazards, and improve the grounds.
The park was purchased by the township for $8.177M after the previous owners sold the land to a developer for $3.5M. A local group of local residents called #SaveMermaid contributed to ensuring the land was not developed.
